Our Story

From Samoa to Stokes Valley: A Journey of Flavor and Passion

My name is Paese, and this is the story of how our family-run business came to be. Growing up in Samoa with my parents and siblings, life was very different from what it is here in New Zealand. While the beauty of the islands surrounded us, I witnessed the daily struggles my parents faced, and it left a deep mark on me.

In Year 13, I made the tough decision to leave school and take a job at a nearby hotel to help my family. That experience opened my eyes to the world of tourism and taught me the importance of hospitality. It was also where I began to learn how to cook from scratch. But honestly, my greatest teacher in the kitchen was my mother. She had a natural talent for cooking and always took pride in impressing others with her dishes. From her, I learned not just recipes but the joy of bringing people together through food.

A New Life in New Zealand

Moving to New Zealand in 2005 wasn’t an easy decision, but my parents always dreamed of a better future for us. Life here came with its own challenges, but it’s also where I found love. Three years after arriving, I met my husband, and together we’ve built a life blessed with three beautiful children.

Over the years, we worked in jobs far removed from what I do today. Yet, my passion for cooking never faded. Like my mother, I took pride in making meals that impressed my family and friends. It was during these moments I realized the power of food to connect people and create joy.

Humble Beginnings

Our journey into the food business started small. We began by preparing supper plates and selling them to the public. On Saturdays, we set up a stall at our local market, sharing homemade dishes inspired by the flavors of Samoa and the Pacific.

The response was incredible, and it gave us the confidence to take the next step. We found a lease property and began operating from there. By 2021, our homemade dishes had gained popularity, and we decided to expand into catering, bringing the authentic taste of the islands to events and celebrations.

Our Commitment to You

At The Island Food Company, every dish we serve carries a piece of our story, our heritage, and our love for food. Whether it’s a plate of chopsuey, roast pork with gravy, or taro and kumara salad, we pour our hearts into every bite.

Thank you for supporting our journey and allowing us to share the flavors of Samoa with the Stokes Valley community and beyond. We look forward to serving you with the same love and care that started this business.
